Carolina Maria de Jesus

(Minas Gerais, 1914 – Sao Paulo, 1977). Spent her childhood in a rural community, and when her mother died, she emigrated to Sao Paulo, where she was forced to subsist as a waste picker in a favela. She read all kinds of publications that she found in the garbage cans and wrote constantly. In 1958 a journalist published fragments of her diary and latter, the Francisco Alaves publishing house published her first book, Quarto de despejo (Garbage Room, 1960). In 1960 she published Casa de alvenaria, and in 1963 Pedaços de fome and Proverbios. Her works Diario de Bitita (1982), Meu estranho diário (1996), Antologia pessoal (1996) and Onde estaes felicidade (2014) were published posthumosly.
