Simón Barquera

Physician and surgeon (Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana) with a Master’s degree and a PhD in Nutrition Sciences and Policy (Tufts University). He is an F-level medical science researcher at the National Health Institutes, and a level-III member of the National Researchers System of Conacyt. He is a member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences and of the National Academy of Medicine of Mexico, as well as of the scientific council of the World Federation of Obesity and the Obesity Society. He has been a consultant for various international agencies, such as the WHO / PAHO, UNICEF, IARC, IAEA, and FAO, in the field of nutrition, obesity, and chronic diseases. He has published over 270 papers in scientific journals and has 18,135 citations. He is also the author of 14 books and reports, and 41 book chapters, both national and international. He has received several recognitions, including the 2003 Fred L. Soper Award for Excellence in Public Health Literature, The 2016 Tufts University Nutrition Impact Award, the 2016 “Distinguished Graduate” Award of Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, and the distinction of teaching the 11th Michael and Susan Dell Chair in Child Health at the University of Texas in 2017, the Alvan R. Feinstein Chair at Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí in 2018, and the 18th Carl J. Martinson Chair at the University of Minnesotta in 2018. Today, Dr. Barquera is a leading researcher on obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular risk, and Director of the Center for Research on Nutrition and Health of the National Institute of Public Health of Mexico.
