PhD in History from Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru; he carried out ethnohistorical research between 1980 and 1981 in the archives of Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina thanks to the support of the Guggenheim Foundation (USA). He obtained a scholarship granted by the Organization of American States to research and write the history of the Cayambes and Carangues ethnic groups. In 1988, he was awarded the International Prize of the Conde Garriga Foundation of Barcelona. In 1990 he received the Palmas Magisteriales from the Ministry of Education in the grade of Teacher. He is Professor Honoris Causa at Universidad Nacional de Trujillo, Universidad Nacional del Centro, Universidad Nacional Hermilio Valdizán and Universidad Ricardo Palma.
