A Brief History of Latina American Rights

Historia mínima de las derechas latinoamericanas

This brief history attempts to explain the paradox through which authoritarian party leaders and organizations and defenders of minority interests have achieved broad social support. How to explain the sympathy of popular sectors towards the thought and political action of the right? The book investigates the course of the Latin American right between the end of the 19th century and the present. In this journey, which goes from Porfirio Díaz to Jair Bolsonaro, the specificity of right-wing ideas and organizations is addressed, as well as their links with business, the Catholic Church, the armed forces and external actors. The work rests on three research strategies: the comparison between right-wing figures, parties and ideas; the study of the processes of transnational circulation of ideologies and people; and the analysis of public discourses, political practices, and the identities of the so-called “enemies” of the nation.
