CLOSELY STRANGED: DOMESTIC SERVICE AND SOCIAL DIFFERENCE

ÍNTIMAMENTE DISTANTES: SERVICIO DOMÉSTICO Y DIFERENCIA SOCIAL

This work explores ways in which social inequality is projected in the intimacies of domestic service and analyzes experiences and life trajectories of three women working as domestic servants in Bogotá, around the tensions that involve social differences between employers and employees. The central argument of this text is that in the domestic service there are multiple configurations of intimacy that are intertwined by the various ways in which social differences between employees and employers are marked. Similarly, the author discusses how “shared” and “individual” illicit intimacies operate in the context of “public privacy” of households for which domestic workers work.
