Colour and Communication in Art and Design

Niveles comunicacionales del color en el arte y el diseño

The autor’s approach is that colour is not what we actually see, that whatever we see it is not what we think it is. And because of that, for quite a long time, we have been studying how to organize colour in a way that allows us to understand it. Since colour cannot be explained from a single point of view, because each perspective limits and restricts its conceptual scope, the author has chosen to explain colour as a polychromatic fan, in which each stick is a level of communication, each stick represents a different perspective. Like in the fan, where we need a set of sticks to make it work, all the perspectives are necessary to articulate a full comprehension of colour.
The first chapter deals with the historical and organizational perspective, to be followed by the physiological and taxonomic ones. Different chapters deal with the relationship between colour and form, Semiotics and Rhethoric. There is a chapter dealing with colour management in the digital environment. The role of colour in the context of trade-marks is analyzed using several case studies. Finally it includes one chapter that analyzes colour in Pre-Columbian designs and another one that explores the relationship between colour and literature. All in all it is a fascinating book about the theory of colour.
