Medical students have to be committed to building their skills in order to contribute to society, which implies a permanent willingness to learn, innovate, and improve their professional performance. But disciplinary knowledge in the basic and clinical sciences alone is not enough and requires a psychosocial approach that helps future physicians to understand that the relationship between health and disease is a complex process that integrates multiple variables that must be considered in order to identify the needs of patients and their families. Hence, with communication skills being indispensable for the development of all medical competencies, the main objective of Habilidades de comunicación en la formación médica contemporánea is to contribute to the students’ awareness of the importance of the timely development of these skills, through the experience of the School of Medicine at Universidad de los Andes and how it has taken on the challenge of accompanying students in improving their communication, so that they achieve an efficient and effective, but above all, more humane, professional practice.
