If Don Quixote is a book about books, his prologue is a paratext against the paratext. Apparently accepting the rhetoric that governs the preface, the author actually rejects it, does not accept the commonplace that it ellipses, refuses to "go with the current use." What Cervantes questions is not the function of these threshold elements, but its constitution as a place of power in which the legitimating instances of the book and the author are produced. Issues related to new ways of manufacturing and trading the book are included in the cover sheet, such as the book inside the book, such as the printing workshop inside Cervantes’s fictional printing workshop, the very representation in the book of the book world.
