Páramo is a complex concept: an ecosystem, a biome, a landscape, a geographic area, a life zone, a production space and even a state of climate. It is also a disputed territory and a fundamental element of culture and history. The Ecuadorian páramos have undergone constant change during the last decades. Their landscape, extension, vegetation, fauna and population have been altered and with them the perception of the páramos. This book is an exploration to understand how and why the páramo has changed, and what are the consequences of this change. We believe that part of the book’s richness lies precisely in presenting not only knowledge, but also positions, all of which enriches the discussions and perspectives.
