To think about a particular art related to black people, requires a differential focus as visual artists and writers—in what has been referred to as diaspora—the imposition of a hegemonic and national culture and the experience of segregation, which does not emerge only because of language, religion or customs, but also because of skin color. In their struggle against racism, many leaders of black organizations, organic intellectuals, and black artists have proposed to strengthen a differentiated cultural tradition. This is what this book is about: understanding and revealing the forms of the visual arts and literature produced by important black artists and writers that have configured a black aesthetic. The particularity of female authorship is also considered a differential factor within this aesthetic, and this is approached separately in this book chapters.
