These pages invite us to meet the sophisticated universe of the musical poetry of guitarist Félix Casaverde, inside the soundscape and the power relations of Lima in the 1950s, where the Afro-Peruvian culture was gaining space and relevance. In the book Félix Casaverde, guitarra negra, Fernando Elías Llanos analyzes the construction of a black identity through the life and study of the musical theory and ethnomusicology of Félix Casaverde’s creations. In the first part, the author puts emphasis on the historical journey, where he focuses on some of the political and cultural premises responsible for racism since colonial times, whose remains and stigmas are still present today. The second part of this book delves into the music setting where the main character of this book evolved, and his contributions and collaborations with Chabuca Granda in the record "Tarimba Negra." Furthermore, the author analyzes the theme "Cuatro tiempos negros jóvenes”, an aesthetic and political synthesis by the aforementioned musician when he is asked about the concepts of negritude, Peruvian identity, African descend, tradition, modernity, and sound experiments. This publication is for all those who want to explore the apparent simplicity of this "young black man" whose guitar and instrumental work —complex in performance nuances and very original in its compositional language— represent "another" possible vision of the music of the Peruvian coast.
