This study is an attempt at an aproximation to the concept of human dignity as the foundation of human rights, and more generally, as the basis for the ethical and legal horizon of contemporary societies. For this treatment the development of the concept, its grounds from the perspective of several authors and schools of philosophical and theological thought, and the criticisms to its use and conceptual pragmatics are taken into account.
