The work demonstrates how the political decisions regarding the Amazon region during the 20th century made it a strategic place for institutions and agencies that had health and the exploitation of nature as their main objectives. The author reveals the process of profound interventions in the forest and in the lives of local populations by analyzing, with creativity and academic rigor, the way in which the region was interpreted and transformed by the Brazilian State from 1930 onwards.
