The merit of the evaluation research conducted here lies in showing the reality that Mais Médicos revealed: millions of Brazilians, among them poor, indigenous and quilombolas who did not even see doctors, started to benefit from one of the most courageous programs of the Dilma Rousseff government. The general public knows the emergency side of the program better – the service to the poorest corners of the country – but Mais Médicos also expanded the medical schools in the countryside, reinforced the concern with basic care and determined that there were strict quality criteria in training, encouraging the evaluation of students in the second and fourth years of the course. What the voices tell us, thanks to this important research, is how, in a short time, Mais Médicos changed the health landscape in Brazil. The book shows that well-designed public policies can work, especially when they add up efforts – such as those of the Ministries of Health and Education – and meet the real needs of the population. It was a great effort, it obtained very positive results and in more democratic times it will be resumed.
