This book is the manifesto of its author, the 93-year-old philosopher, musicologist, esthete and writer Gastón Soublette, who considers that the current crisis is only the Chilean version of a mega-crisis that covers the entire world and that has been brewing for several years. This is related with respect to the myth of progress based on an economic and technological construct. The author reflects on the October outbreak in Chile and the coronavirus pandemic, and proposes that the cause of this situation is the human being himself and puts in the psychological evolution of the people, their rulers and thinkers, the cause of the human type who has conceived today’s civilization. “It is still time to reflect, some believe, to face what comes with a good conscience that protects and frees us from the dangers of an all-encompassing crisis. As the popular saying goes, it is still time for you to open your eye if you don’t want it to be opened”.
Gastón Soublette received the Premio Corporación Patrimonio Cultural de Chile 2020 Award
Gastón Soublette once again challenges us with “Manifesto”, a new book about the crisis we are still in (social outbreak and pandemic) and for which there is no clear end in sight. Soublette is our chilean Isaías: “Voice crying out in the desert.”
[…] This is not a book by a political analyst or a crisis expert, it is instead a book by a man of great intuitions and insights. Soublette fits the category of “sage” better than the philosopher. T.S. Elliot wondered: “Where was the wisdom that became knowledge / where the knowledge that degraded into information?” In fact, for Soublette, the loss of popular wisdom is related to the loss of community and the decline of culture, with the anguished sense of rootlessness that this produces. For Soublette, the social outbreak and the pandemic are just the tip of the iceberg of a global civilizational and cultural crisis, a crisis that requires a new response, a new paradigm”.
