Chiapas rural population has suffered the impacts of the global economy, as well as the economic policies of structural adjustment on small local production, together with the effects of disasters caused by meteorological phenomena, especially in regions such as the Sierra (today Sierra-Mariscal region). Under these conditions, families have turned to migration the United States as a destiny, and different parts of our country, a strategy to obtain work and income that they cannot find in their original environment, from which they formulate new practices and resources of organization. However, at the same time, this process involves a change in the structure and configuration of the internal relations of the families. This book covers all these issues and with a chronological analysis that turns out to be an innovative story of departure of a large part of the working-age population in the communities of the Sierra; at the same time it offers an analysis and discussion about the contemporary rural family.
