48.5 million tons of palm oil are consumed annually around the world, placing it third in importance worldwide after soybean and canola oil. The affordable price and the accessibility to markets are forces that determine consumption of vegetable fats in the world. Palm oil, in a stable price environment, is the cheapest one. In United States and in countries of central and northern Europe, high volumes of animal fat are consumed, both in homes and restaurant industry, even with the consequent health damage.
