Patencie Games, a seminar on the " Benefit of Christ"

This volume recounts the evolution of a historical research carried out in a doctoral seminar at the University of Bologna, taught by Carlo Ginzburg and Adriano Prosperi in 1971. Here it is shown how a collective research applied to a religious text widely spread and condemned by the Inquisition in the 16th century that remained anonymous for a long time: : the famous very useful Treatise on the benefit of Christ crucified for Christians. Games of patience is interesting for any reader, but especially for historians or aspiring ones since one of the most developed aspects highlighted is the research method, which immediately turns out to be very instructive. It insists on the need to face an investigation without ideological prejudices or condemnations of any kind, but it ponders the importance of the precise intuitions of a confident and demanding researcher, even if they only arose or are barely outlined. The research wanders in a labyrinthine network of hypotheses and counter-hypotheses that alter and eliminate one another: hints that lead to sometimes dead-ends.
