Poverty and inequality in Costa Rica: crossing the threshold

Pobreza y desigualdad en Costa Rica: cruzando el umbral

The analysis of poverty and inequality has become a central issue in the relationship between economic growth and human development. We understand that the problems of poverty and inequality are not exclusively determined by an unequal distribution of income, but that these respond to a series of additional factors, related to gender, ethnic, age, social and territorial gaps; which limit access to basic goods and services (education and health) and insertion in labor markets with social security. Different theoretical and methodological approaches have come to enrich the understanding of two complex and intrinsically related phenomena. These approaches have informed and allowed a better design and implementation of public policies to address the challenge of reducing poverty and inequality, in order to advance towards higher levels of well-being and human development for citizens.
