Sewing and culture. Sociological approaches to clothing
Costura y cultura. Aproximaciones sociológicas sobre el vestir
Relegated to the corner of subjectivity and style, clothing has for decades carried the stigma of becoming a design without due recognition of other designs. Its temporary nature, its suspicious closeness to an artistic authorship and the pasatist flow of fashion have for a long time prevented its inclusion without objection in the world of designers. This happens perhaps because they converge in fashion and clothing a set of social phenomena that, far from frivolity, are visibly serious and complex, and certainly nothing new. The symbolic order of a society, the construction of gender, social differences, ideas of use, the role of the body, the relationship between individuality and group, unrepeatability and seriation, uniqueness and type of use, are a range of problems that intersect in this object of study.
