MUJERES SITUADAS: LAS PARTERAS AUTÓNOMAS EN MÉXICO
The book “Situated women: autonomous midwives in Mexico” goes deep into the world of contemporary autonomous midwives in Mexico. Born in the wave of human rights movements, and intimately related to the modern dilemmas of midwifery, the book explores the complex characteristics of the struggles that these midwives undertake. Submerged in various challenges, these midwives tend to fall between professional and traditional midwifery models while simultaneously blurring this division. Given that autonomy, is one of the central elements these midwives do not possess, the concept results politically significant when pressing forward the criticism of the medicalization of birth and the anti-systemic posture. This way, the book captures the global, historical and regional panorama of the contemporary midwifery struggles and brings forth the mini-narratives of midwives themselves, discussed during encounters with the author.
