THE CLINICAL AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES OF THE SUICIDOLOGIST

RETOS CLÍNICOS Y SOCIALES DEL SUICIDÓLOGO

This book explains readers how mental health professionals face the challenges in their field of action. Retos clínicos y sociales del suicidólogo is divided in five chapters, each one with a theoretical-academic explanation and a fictional story (in the way of an allegorical narration). This method has been used to expose the scenarios and emotions that the author experiences and that may be identified and experienced also by other mental health professionals in the therapeutic practice with suicidal patients. These five challenges come from different spheres: the management of acute cases in clinical practice; unusual experiences with suicidal patients, like the use of humor, the value of money and naturalizing the idea of death; dealing with prejudice in the social and cultural beliefs about suicide; the insensitivity and stigmatization of the media when narrating the occurrence of suicides; the role of support groups and ways to discuss the issue openly. Thus, the purpose of this book is to illustrate professionals, students and individuals related to the mental health field about the existence of difficulties and particular suicidology cases.
