The essays included in this book are the result of contributions from renowned experts on sustainable development and environmental democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean. The content is organized in five parts with fourteen articles that provide different perspectives on the Escazú Agreement within the framework of five areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet—part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development—known as the five Ps: people, planet, prosperity, peace, and partnership. For the United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and the Faculty of Jurisprudence of the Universidad del Rosario, the Escazú Agreement represents a valuable and unprecedented opportunity for the region not only to strengthen democracy, human rights, and environmental protection, but also to fulfill the most significant global agenda of our time: sustainable development. We hope that these reflections contribute to the elaboration of better policies and legal and institutional frameworks regarding access to information, public participation, justice in environmental matters, and the protection of environmental defenders in Latin American and Caribbean countries.
