The Garbage Room

Cuarto de desechos

This Garbage Room is built from the diaries that Carolina Maria de Jesus wrote, where she narrates the daily life in the favela, motherhood, love, life and a commitment to writing that goes beyond every obstacle. Without access to formal studies, the singular and spontaneous poetry that inhabits these pages is nourished by the varied literature that the author rescued from the garbage cans, a language of her own that the team of translators from UNILA knew how to recognize, respect and bring into Spanish with great care. It is literature written from the furthest margins that, as Junko Ogata points out in her prologue, “has always had its own life, a voice that has rarely been heard due to the discomfort it presents.” Put simply, Garbage Room is “the writing of a Black woman, proud to be one, who fervently believes in words as companions in the mire.”
