The attribution of a monetary value to aproperty, a service, or a person depends on the circumstances, it develops in a particular way, and generates consequences that cannot be understood based on the notion of price. These unnoticed dimensions are the focus of the perspective presented in this volume. In a given moment, the division of intellectual work established that economists should deal with the question of “value”, and sociologists should pay attention to “values”. This book calls into question such division and suggests an understanding of monetary valuations as rich and complex processes, in which the production, alteration, and negotiation of social, moral, and aesthetic hierarchies are at stake.
