The Useful Mouths: A Sociological and Anthropological Approach to Anorexia

Las bocas útiles. Aproximaciones sociológicas y antropológicas a la anorexia

Anorexia is a complex disorder of multifaceted—bodily, social, and relational—dimensions. Refusing to eat is just one of many signs of this disorder, which can affect people in several ways. This publication looks at anorexia through the specific experiences of eight young people (aged 13-24) from Mexico City, and also offers a comprehensive analysis of this disease based on two core ideas: hierarchical relationships between generations and the sexes, and the issue of the subject. The book’s main argument is that anorexia is a way for those suffering from the disorder to become subjects, affirming their own existence while also exercising control over relationships with their body and with other people.
