This book is an analysis of photography of the late nineteenth century taking into account different ways in which the production, diffusion, consumption and appropriation collaborated in the construction of stories about progress and modernization, and at the same time how photography was instituted as a modern device. Its complex status, is a continuous tension between the documentary, the artistic and the scientific conditions made photography the specificity of its period.
