Walk the coffee plantation. Socio-environmental perspectives of coffee and its people
Caminar el cafetal. Perspectivas socioambientales del café y su gente
When we think of coffee we evoke its aroma and flavor, in addition to feelings and emotions, however, we rarely reflect on where the bean comes from, who planted it, what life is like for coffee-growing families, what environmental challenges they face when growing and marketing it, how its price is set in international markets and all the relationships that are established for consumers to enjoy this drink
Coffee production is currently facing low prices, climate change, pests and the lack of interest of the new generations, among other threats, which are exposed throughout this publication, which is made up of five sections: the coffee plantation agroecosystem; productive diversification and food sovereignty; family and organization; learnings for the future; lessons and routes of coffee growing. In 35 chapters, the authors present contributions and innovative alternatives for the management of coffee plantations, its main pests, diseases and weeds, the use of soil, shade and wastewater, productive diversification through the cultivation of edible mushrooms, forestry, organic honey production, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems, the rustic cultivation of orchids and the generation of environmental services, through which the reading public will understand that coffee is more than a drink and a crop, and that the subsistence of this sector it requires the conjunction of producers, civil society, academic institutions and government. The book, which is aimed at students, specialists and people interested in agricultural, forestry, environmental disciplines and in the subject of coffee.
